Leadership is one of the main areas of study nowadays. A number of books, articles, and research papers are written on this discipline and we receive much information about this. Leadership is a relationship between leaders and followers, and building this relationship requires an appreciation for the personal values of those who would be willing to give their enerà ¬gy and talents to accomplish shared objectives. Transformational leadership and leader-member exchange are popular theories in the leadership arena. Various researchers and writers have established the validity of these concepts. A number of writers emphasize the role of fairness in the relation between a leader and a follower. LMX was originally referred to as Vertical Dyad Linkage (VDL) theory. According to VDL approach, leaders and folà ¬lowers develop dyadic relationships, leaders develop unique working relationships with group members and as a result follower divide in two groups ââ¬âan in-group and an out-group. The in-group is a small number of trusted followers with whom the leader usually esà ¬tablishes a special higher quality exchange relationship. The out-group includes the remaining followers with whom the reà ¬lationship of the leader remains more formal understanding. These varying soà ¬cial exchange relationships are relatively enduring; they develop due to the leaderââ¬â¢s limited time and energy, and inability to give the same attention to all followers. Quality of leader-member exchange positively related to followerââ¬â¢s satisfaction, organizational comà ¬mitment, role clarity, performance ratings given by leaders, and objective performance, and negatively related to role conflict. High-quality reà ¬lationship with oneââ¬â¢s leader can affect the entire work experià ¬ence in a positive manner, including performance and affective outcomes. The development of relationships in a leader-follower dyad can also be looked at in terms of a life-cycle model with three phases.
